Watching My Students Grow

Recently we opened a new class at the LITE English school with two new students in one of our upper Intermediate Classes.

The remainder of the class had already been with the school for several previous courses – B4, Int 1, Int 2 – but the new students had been examined on their written and oral English at registration, and their grammar tested out to Int 3 level, and so they joined our Int 3 class.

What became immediately evident, however, was the relaxed attitude and confidence of the existing students compared to the newcomers.

Of course, to be fair, any new student to a classroom is going to experience some degree of anxiety as they adjust to the climate of the new class environment.

Nevertheless, the LITE English system is unique and the experienced students have without a doubt developed a level of ease and aplomb when practicing, in English, their new course content and vocabulary.

We are now into our third week of the Int 3 course, however and the new students are already cracking through the barriers of their previous learning patterns and falling adroitly into the LITE learning system.

For example, last night in our class we were engaging in conversation of a controversial topic: Today’s World.

The students launched into their discussion of this subject with gusto and as the room filled with laughter and a highly interested exchange, the classroom took on the atmosphere of a Saturday morning coffee shop with guests chatting animatedly with each other about the latest news and gossip.

It was as if the students didn’t want to stop talking, and if I had let them continue, the entire lesson time would probably have been consumed by conversation alone!

But we had other matters to cover, and so I eventually reined them in.

We had spent no less than thirty minutes on this first step of the lesson plan alone!

These students now can hold a conversation in English easily and relaxedly for half an hour! And they were loving it.

As the newer students advance, the complexities of English grammar slowly drop away and the students just start speaking naturally as if fluency in English had been an innate ability the whole time.

Self-confidence, fluency and ease of expression in English become a natural talent to these LITE English students.

And as my class approaches the end goal of the LITE English curriculum, I can state with confidence that I have done my job well and my students will soon be fully equipped to leave the school with poise and assurance, to travel or work anywhere in the world where the English language is spoken.
